Accidental Overdose

The results of Anna Nicole Smith's autopsy have finally been released. At a press conference this morning Seminole Police Department Chief Charlie Tiger announced that the cause of death was"an accidental overdose with no other criminal element present." The medical examiner, Dr. Joshua Perper said he found methadone, anti-anxiety and weight-reducing drugs, vitamins, and other substances in her system.

He also said that after police conducted a thorough investigation they found nothing to indicate foul play. In this investigation they reviewed hotel security videotapes and the contents of the Howard K. Stern's laptop.

So basically, we waited almost two months to learn something we already knew.

Law & Order: Criminal Intent is once again ripping from the headlines. They are rumored to be working on an episode inspired by the Anna Nicole Smith tragedy starring Kristi Swanson as Anna (I can see it) and Jon Lovitz as Howard K. Stern (perfect choice!), loosely based and any similarity coincidental of course. Awesome!! This is going to be better than Chevy Chase playing Mel Gibson. You know they're going to have Howard be responsible for the murders just like in real life! I hope they also get Kathy Griffin to play an annoying, nosy, Mary Hart-type entertainment reporter that keeps butting in and trying to get info. That would be icing!

I've been over the Anna Nicole death/baby/body scandal for about four months now, but in case anyone (other than Entertainment Tonight) was morbidly chomping at the bit to get a peek at her funeral dress, here it is. It's by Beverly Hills designer Pol' Atteu. I had a similar one for my Barbie doll when I was eight.

I swear, that studio must be covered in used tissues because I guarantee they jack off over there every time they get a new detail.

Did anyone see last night's episode? I don't know if it was ET or Insider (they're both the same anyway) but it was sickening. They went into all this detail describing the funeral arrangements. For a minute there, I actually thought they were talking about a wedding: "Anna will take her final ride from the beautiful church, past the lovely Bahamian beaches and crystal blue water to the grave site, which will be decorated with lilies and azalias ...." GROSS GROSS GROSS! Stop it!

In the video, an 8-months-pregnant Smith directly addressed Spears, who was also expecting her second child (their respective babies, Dannielynn and Jayden, were born five days apart in September): “If you see this for some oddball reason – because I look at your stuff, too [referring to Spears’ Web site] – and you want to be friends, I would love so much to hang out with you,” she said. “I think you’re totally cool, and I think we’re about to have babies around the same time…I would just love to meet you.”

Smith finished up with her contact info: “You can call my lawyer, my best friend, my confidant Howard Stern. I think everyone has his number. He’ll give it out to you, Britney. Take cares [sic], and I hope that you do great on your second pregnancy. I’m sure you won’t even see this, but if you do, I’d really love to talk to you. Bye.” '


Could you imagine if that hookup ever happened? It's a good thing for us all that it didn't , the earth would probably have spontaneously combusted from all the crazy.

Sorry, I'm Team Aniston, but I just can't buy this one. It's like Jen's publicist wants to out-saint Saint Angelina.

As you may have noticed, I haven't posted any stories on Anna Nicole Smith since her death and autopsy. My reasoning is this, it's nearly impossible and physically exhausting to keep up with every BREAKING STORY! and there are plenty of other newssites and blogs (see "NOT ASSHATS" sidebar) that are doing a great job keeping up, not to mention Entertainment Tonight-who are creaming their shorts and milking this more than the Mary Kay Lanterno wedding. But this story I felt compelled to comment on because I have a great idea that I'd like to pitch to the folks at Fox.

' Sources tell TMZ that Smith and Stern, in collaboration with Hallock Healey Entertainment, shopped around the reality show, centered on Anna's quest to find a husband -- similar in concept to VH1's "Flavor of Love." The program would have had men, young and old, of different ethnicities and orientations vying for Anna's affections, with the "winner" marrying her. We're told the series was pitched as being very tongue-in-cheek, and that during meetings, network execs were repeatedly told how Anna was "completely in on the joke," and that in at least one meeting, Anna brought her poodle Sugar Pie along ... perhaps as an executive producer.

While no network went forward with the series, Anna did wind up finding a partner, of sorts, in Stern. '


Ok, so here's my idea. Repitch this as a reality show called "Who's the Daddy" to settle once and for all who Danielyn's father is. And Sugar Pie should definitely be the executive producer.

Initial Autopsy Results

' The cause and manner of death were not determined, however, and the investigation remains open.

Dr. Joel A. Perper, chief medical examiner of Broward County, Florida, said there was no indication of blunt-force trauma, asphyxiation or other physical trauma.

Perper said his office is awaiting results of toxicological and other tests, but there were no drugs in her stomach.

"There are a number of possibilities," he said, including natural causes, a drug reaction or some combination of causes.

Seminole Police Chief Charlie Tiger said no evidence suggests a crime occurred.

Tiger said no illegal drugs were found in Smith's hotel room. He said prescription drugs were found, but would not name them.

He said police were still analyzing surveillance tapes from the hotel, but so far had seen nothing unusual.

It could take weeks for tests to determine what the cause of death was.

"We don't have supermen or superwomen working in our office," Perper said.

Authorities investigating Smith's death retrieved a "large amount" of prescription medicine from her hotel room, law enforcement sources familiar with the investigation said. The sources did not characterize any of the drugs as illegal.

The prescription drugs were in the name of her lawyer and boyfriend, Howard K. Stern, and included Valium and antibiotics, a law enforcement source said. Over-the-counter drugs, including cold and flu medicines, also reportedly were found.

Smith's attorney, Ron Rale, told reporters his client had been suffering from flulike symptoms for the last couple of days.

Meanwhile, "Entertainment Tonight's" Mark Steines, the last person to interview her, told CNN that Smith had to be placed in an ice bath Tuesday after her fever reached 105 degrees.

Her fever came down, Steines said, but on Wednesday she slipped and fell in the bathtub. When Stern and her nurse went to check on her, "she seemed a little bit out of it" but didn't appear to have suffered any significant injuries, Steines said.

"That led to yesterday," Steines said Friday, "when after taking a nap, I believe, she never came to and never woke up." '

DNA Test DENIED

' A California judge on Friday refused to order an emergency DNA test on the body of Anna Nicole Smith as part of a paternity suit involving her infant daughter, but he ordered that the body be preserved until a hearing February 20, attorneys said.

Larry Birkhead and Howard K. Stern both claim to be the father of baby Dannielynn. Attorneys for Larry Birkhead wanted to be sure Anna's DNA was tested, to prevent what they call a "bait and switch," where another child's DNA would be used as a sample. (Ah, ok, now I understand!)

Anna's attorney Ron Rale said he has spoken to Stern and that he was "incoherent" on the phone. Rale also indicated he was angry about being dragged into court when he should be in Miami offering Stern his "friendship and assistance" during this difficult time. He also said when he spoke to Anna in the past few days, she was "fine and totally coherent." '

• The autopsy of Anna Nicole Smith's body began this morning at 9:20 AM (EST). A toxicology test will also be performed. There will be a press conference later today.

• There will also be an emergency hearing to decide whether a court-ordered DNA sample can be taken from her body to help determine the biological father of her daughter, Dannielynn. (not sure I understand that, why would they need to test the mother's DNA?) PEOPLE

• The "employee" of Anna's who found her in her hotel room says she appeared to have choked on her own vomit.

• Anna's mother Vergie Arthur gave an interview to Good Morning America this morning. Among her quotes:

  didn't listen. She was too drugged up."

UPDATED Anna Nicole Smith Dead

' Anna Nicole Smith has been hospitalized in Florida, sources tell PEOPLE. Her attorney, Ron Rale, says she is alive.

Sources say Smith was found unresponsive in her hotel room at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Fla., where she was staying with her companion, Howard K. Stern.

According to Access Hollywood, she was rushed to Memorial Regional Hospital shortly after 2 p.m. ET on Thursday. '

I really hope Larry Birkhead finally gets to prove he is the father and gets custody of Dannielynn. This is really sad, that poor child.

UPDATES:

- Anna's 5 month-old daughter Dannielynn is currently in the Bahamas under the care of the mother of Shane Gibson, a high-ranking Bahamian official who is a close friend of Smith's.

- Anna's bodyguard administered CPR before paramedics arrived.

- Anna had a private nurse with her at the hotel.

- Anna's body will be picked up by the Broward County Medical Examiner.
